I drove 1,200 miles in a Ford Fusion rental car. Hated it. I drove 300 miles in a Fiat 500. Loved it. The Fiat reminds me in many ways of my old girlfriend. It’s cute, fun to treat like a rental, speaks Italian, is more than I can afford and is riddled with infuriating idiosyncrasies.

Take from that what you will. It’s 4 PM and I’m 4 beers in so if you find spelling errors; good for you.

The Fiat is, above all, lovable. Like my old gf, the 500 has some maddening flaws but its just so cute that you can’t stay mad at it.

WHY ARE THE WINDOW SWITCHES ON THE CONSOLE?? Why is the trip reset on the wiper stalk?? Why is there no analogue speedometer? WHY ARE THE SEAT BOTTOMS SO SHORT??

These are questions I asked in between the time that the rube goldberg auto-trans shakily navigated the shift from second to third.

THAT SAID: The Fiat is an eager driving companion. It dives into corners with alacrity and has a lusty engine note for a 1.4 liter four. It makes you laugh. NO OTHER SUBCOMPACT gives you such joy.

It’s a light hearted car and that’s such a rarity. in a word where every rock band tekes themselves seriously, the 500 wears a propeller cap as if to say “I’m fun.”

I love you, Mr. 500. Godspeed rental Fiat.

VW could so make the case of getting the Up! to this side of the planet.

The Up! is neither cute nor fun. It is competent.

It isn’t cute as the Fiat obviously, but it is fun.
